Shepherd’s Hut with Bathroom – What You Need to Know

The quintessential English shepherd’s hut has evolved considerably from humble beginnings. Originally the shepherd’s hut, at 12’ long by 6’ wide, provided welcome shelter to a single shepherd and his dog. Over the years the shepherd’s hut has, by necessity, become wider and longer to accommodate extra features such as double beds, small kitchens and bathrooms.

So if you’ve chosen to include a bathroom in your shepherd’s hut here’s what you need to know when it comes to pipework, plumbing and pumps.

Pipework

With the addition of plumbing the question arises of how do you connect to services. A typical en-suite Plankbridge Cabin design features a shower, flushing loo, wash basin and kitchen sink. The pipework usually connects to a single 110mm UPVc waste pipe outlet ready for the customer to connect. If possible the hut would be sited somewhere straightforward for basic groundworks to connect the hut to an existing drain or sewage treatment unit. There are lifting stations; small chambers that, at appropriate intervals, pump the contents up or away to wherever the drain is located. A good groundworks or building firm will be able to advise on the best way to do this.

With the rise in the glamping scene there are other solutions to waste management from flat tanks which sit under the hut, to underground storage and treatment units.

Water & Electrics

The shepherd’s hut will also need a water feed into the hut, and a suitable electric supply – an electric water heater will require a 64amp supply to the hut. We also offer ‘off-grid’ huts where a 12 volt electric system (with solar panel) runs the lighting and sockets, with hot water provided by an LPG (gas) boiler. A composting toilet (such as the Separett) is an option for those who are open to the idea, or you could consider a cassette type unit. The grey water from the shower can sometimes be run into a soakaway nearby.

Baths, Showers, Toilets & Tiles

We have made many huts with an actual bathroom with a roll top bath, rather than a shower, and have even made a few with both, and an outdoor shower too. Tiles are an option for an extra special interior design scheme, and we are introducing a unique Plankbridge wood grain shower tray / wall lining very soon.

With our broad experience we are very happy to help with this; do get in touch to discuss your plans.
