We have a special fondness for every hut we build at Plankbridge. Each one is a reflection of its owner’s hopes, dreams and personal style, and quite often, as the journey progresses from the first conversation to the finished hut, a sense of friendship develops along the way. One of those huts is a recent creation for a lovely customer in Devon.
Having worked closely with our team over the past couple of months and made multiple visits to the workshop, with Jane picking her up from the local train station, it’s been a pleasure getting to know her and bring her vision to life. She had fallen in love with our sweet chestnut interior at Chelsea, and was determined to create a hut that wasn’t just beautiful but truly special. It was clear from the start that this beautiful homegrown, sustainable wood – hand-sanded and waxed to bring out its rich tone and natural scent – was exactly what she had in mind for this little hut that would live in a quiet corner of her Devon land.

With carefully chosen DeVol light switches and Volga linen blinds, the hut also features a custom-sized bed, a log burner and a handcrafted fold-down oak desk beneath the window, engraved with a delicate sketch from Gertrude Jekyll’s personal notebooks.

But perhaps the most touching detail of all is a small wooden plaque, hidden beneath the desk, inscribed in her late mother’s handwriting, taken from one of her old books, with her name and date of birth. A quiet tribute that our craftsmen have loved weaving into the fabric of the hut, and a deeply personal touch that makes an already beautiful hut all the more special.
