Beds: The Heart of the Hut

Sweet dreams in a Plankbridge bed

It’s hard to look out at snowy scenes of sheep in the fields around the Plankbridge workshop in the depths of winter without imagining the Victorian shepherd in his wheeled hut sheltering from the elements. There is something inherently romantic about the thought of him reading by candlelight, boiling water on his pot belly stove and sleeping on his narrow daybed by the glow of a fire – an old coat or hessian sack rolled up as a makeshift pillow, a couple of wool blankets pulled over him for warmth and only the distant bleat of his flock and the crackle of wood for company.

Comfort levels have of course come a long way since then, but the bed still plays a central role in the shepherd’s hut experience, anchoring the space and lending warmth, character and rustic charm to the surroundings. Nothing beats dozing off to sleep in a warm, comfortable Plankbridge bed under a canopy of stars, and waking up to the sound of birdsong, a cup of tea in hand as you look out at the morning view. Whether it’s a single bed tucked into a nook of a Snug or a luxurious king-size with an exceptionally comfy Italian Orthosoft mattress and under-bed storage in the case of our Standard Weekender or Guest House, many customers tell us it’s the best night’s sleep they’ve ever had.

As with every element of a hut build, from roof pitches to cladding, there is also the option to customise your sleeping arrangements should you choose. Our design team and craftspeople love to flex their creative muscles, and have built everything from sleeping platforms and pull-out beds to cosy raised nooks with storage and concealed dog houses – even a set of colourful children’s bunks for Skanes Djurpark ‘Shaun the Sheep Land in Sweden’, which really is the stuff of dreams. One thing’s for sure, with a Plankbridge bed you won’t have any trouble nodding off.
