Meet the Team | Rachel Smith, Brand Ambassador

As the proud owner of her own successful glamping business in the historic village of Eyam in the Peak District, nobody sings the praises of our huts quite like Rachel – making her the perfect new brand ambassador for Plankbridge and a valuable point of contact for our customers in the North…

Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you came to join the team?

My background is in finance, but I left a job I’d had for 26 years for a better work-life balance 11 years ago. Running The Hut Eyam is now my job, although it doesn’t feel like it –it scratches my creative itch and desire to encourage people to slow down and escape their busy lives for a night or two.

When we took delivery of our Plankbridge Snug nearly 12 years ago it was tucked away at the bottom of our large garden and was intended to be a side hustle, but now our alternative B&B has become so popular that it’s now a full-time job.

Tell us about your brand ambassador role at Plankbridge

The idea is that I’ll be representing the brand, initially meeting potential partners and customers to help them on their Plankbridge journey. And because I’m based in the North, I am able to see people who might not have the opportunity to get down to the Plankbridge workshop in Dorset.

You’ve got a very loyal and engaged following on Instagram. Has that been important to building your business?

I set up thehuteyam_thecottageeyam on Instagram to show guests what we have to offer –the beautiful area, local places to visit, activities and places to eat and drink, etc. Since then we’ve gathered quite a following. Guests love to go behind the scenes and see what we are up to – including, of course, our Airedale, Gilbert!

Any words of advice for anyone thinking of setting up glamping accommodation in a shepherd’s hut?

I’d say do it! It’s hard work but it’s rewarding. Stick to your values and goals. Shepherd’s huts are such a unique place for a mini break that guests will talk about it for years to come. Another thing is don’t be afraid to work with your local eateries and support local businesses who in turn will support you back.

Favourite touches that make your hut that little bit special for your guests?

Seasons are our super power here at The Hut Eyam, from the fresh garden pickings on the window sill to the basket of breakfast ingredients. We encourage time for couples to be together in a beautiful place without the distractions of technology.

And finally, what is it about working with Plankbridge that you’re looking forward to the most?

Plankbridge shepherd’s huts have been a major part of my life so it’s a privilege to now be a part of the friendly team to promote the quality of these beautiful huts. I’m hoping to bring my enthusiasm for the brand and share it with partners and customers.
