The art of the hut

From landscape and portraiture to botanical illustrationwe love creating studio huts that give artists the perfect space to pursue their creative passions

When it comes to creating the perfect space for artistic expression, there’s really nothing quite like a Plankbridge hut. Tucked away in peaceful spots and blissfully free from distraction, they offer artists the stillness they need to immerse themselves in their work. With generous natural light and views in all directions, they often become a source of inspiration in themselves.

Over the years, our craftsmen have built a wide variety of huts for all kinds of creatives, from writers and painters to illustrators and musicians. One particularly memorable hut that springs to mind was created for New Forest artist Janet Bullas, who works in mixed media, capturing the natural forms and colours of the landscapes around Dorset and Hampshire. It was a project from a few years back and it’s lovely to think of Janet at her easel, bringing her creative vision to life in the hut we built for her.

Another project involved designing a 12ft bespoke studio for an artist in Lancashire who wanted to position her hut in a former quarry with views of a lake. In order that she could see the water below we lowered the sill of the window to desk height. She later wrote to tell us:

“Enjoying my shepherd’s hut immensely. I’m painting in there now as I’m studying Botanical Illustration in London, so I need a quiet place sometimes…”

More recently, the team have been especially taken by a bespoke studio hut created for a local portrait artist, in the final stages of production in the workshop. Designed for one-to-one portrait sittings, it features an ensuite WC for clients, wallpapered in a beautiful Colefax & Fowler design, specially designed vertical canvas racks and an inkwell set into a bespoke oak desk to hold pens and brushes. Most striking of all are the beautiful oak double doors that open onto a wooden deck, allowing sunlight to flood in just beside her easel. We can already imagine them flung open on a warm day, light spilling into the studio, sitters of all ages enjoying the view.

Each project brings something new, and it’s always a joy to help shape these thoughtful, personal spaces. If you’d like to explore creating your own studio with us, we’d love to hear from you at enquiries@plankbridge.com.
