Wonder walls: the magic of wallpaper in a Plankbridge Shepherd’s Hut

Picture a shepherd’s hut interior, and people often imagine cocooning wooden walls, a woodburning stove in the corner and a comfy bed beneath the window. What rarely comes to mind is wallpaper. But increasingly, our customers have been choosing to add wallpaper to their huts, and the results are stunning.

Wallpaper might seem like something reserved for grand country houses or classic townhouses, but it can work wonders in smaller spaces too. Even the tiniest room can come alive with the right print and colours. In a Plankbridge hut, where every detail is carefully thought out, wallpaper brings in softness, texture and personality. It can create a striking feature wall behind a bed, reading nook or dining area, making the space feel luxurious, layered and welcoming – just like a favourite room you never want to leave.

Over the years, we’ve incorporated exquisite wallpapers into a range of hut projects, including a Sandberg Raphael wallpaper inspired by French 18th-century Gobelin tapestry which lent an almost chateau-style backdrop to the bathroom of one customer’s hut, and a fantastically opulent silver wallpaper from America that was added as a feature wall to another with all the reverence of craftsmen applying gold leaf.

We have also had the privilege of working with Dorset-based artist Fee Greening’s beautiful Harlequin Pearl design and Colefax and Fowler’s quintessentially English Berkeley Sprig wallpaper, inspired by an early fragment of block-printed wallpaper found in Berkeley Square – both designs expertly hung by our Project Lead Kate’s dad, Steve, a true perfectionist and a master with the pasting brush.

Looking ahead, we have several more exciting wallpaper projects on the horizon – the iconic Strawberry Thief design by William Morris will grace the wall behind the headboard of a bespoke Weekender – with blackbirds pecking at ripe strawberries it’s the perfect fit for clients who own a strawberry farm. Meanwhile, House of Hackney’s Prataria wallpaper, inspired by the wildflower meadows native to America and a field of dandelion, calendula, yarrow and mallow, will adorn the walls of a child’s twin room in a Family Hut headed for Santa Barbara, California. Finished off with painted shutters, we can’t help thinking it will have all the cosy, magical appeal of a little nest.

Choosing wallpaper is a personal decision, and that’s part of what makes it so special. It’s an opportunity to express your taste, your memories, your vision for how you want to feel in the space. Whether you go for wild florals or bold geometrics, it’s a wonderful reminder that the smallest spaces can still make the biggest statements. The only question is: what would you choose?
