Stay: Wallops Wood

A number of traditional Snug shepherd’s huts and a bespoke off-grid toilet/shower block sit in a private, secluded meadow in a clearing in the woods. Like something out of a children’s book with a magical and peaceful atmosphere.

It’s back to basics for lighting, heating, cooking and washing – just like it was for a shepherd out lambing.

Cooking and heating The heart of your shepherd’s hut is the wood-burning stove which provides heat for cooking and hot water. Their stoves feature a large hotplate and an oven just big enough to roast a small chicken, or even bake fresh bread. Firewood is included and stoves are pre-laid to light on arrival.

Lighting Hurricane lamps and battery-operated candles provide a cosy, intimate atmosphere in the evenings and your hosts show you how they work when you arrive.

Hot water Water needs to be heated up on the stove or campfire in the big kettle provided. Draw your water from the stand pipes around the site and use a traditional jug and bowl for washing. Hot water is also available in the wash hut where there are showers and composting toilets.

We slept like logs with the wind sweeping around the hut. I’d recommend to anyone wanting to get off the grid, who wants to switch their phone off and reflect on what really matters.

Will, Hut Guest

A fantastic weekend spent in Wallops Wood. We had three shepherds huts between two families, plus hot tub. The site was idyllic, lots of privacy and space to roam. The huts were really well equipped. Lovely walks nearby too.
